One of the early announcements at D23 was the name of the restaurant currently under construction in the Adventureland section of the Magic Kingdom in the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando. The new restaurant will be called the “Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen”.  The restaurant will contain several specially themed rooms including a crew mess hall and one room that it appears will harken back to the now defunct Adventure’s Club.

It will serve jungle cuisine which is expected to be a blend of Asian, African and South American foods.   Among the specialty foods expected to be available is a slate of dishes based on the rivers guests sail on during the Jungle Cruise attraction.  Dishes include the Irrawaddy Coddy, King MeKong Catfish, Perch that is in da Nile, trunked Congo Elephant Fish, and Amazon Prime Piranha.

The Skipper’s Canteen will be opening later this year….assuming Gilligan doesn’t foul things up again.

New Rumors About Toy Story Land

Star Wars land was just one of the numerous announcements made at the D23 Expo in Anaheim.  Another big announcement, and one that surprised just about everyone, was the announcement of a new 11 acre land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios themed to Toy Story.

Toy Story Land will make you feel like you shrunk down and are wandering through Andy’s backyard. It will contain two newly announced attractions. The first, will be a family friendly roller coaster in which you will get to ride around on the back of Slinky Dog. The second, will be a spinning ride involving the little green alien men.

Now there has been a lot of Buzz around the the concept drawings that were released. The land looks a little Rocky with a fair number of trees but we are not sure if Woody would be the best way to describe it.

While there has been no Peep about food in the land, rumors of a counter service restaurant serving Hamm, Barbie Q, RC cola and  potatoes heads the list.

But for now, we will have to wait and Jessie if Disney has hit the Bullseye with this one!

Iger’s Audible: Star Wars Land was never planned for Disneyland!

If you follow Disney news…heck…really any news at all, you’ve heard that Disney made it official that they are building Star Wars Land.  Disney President and CEO Bob Iger made that announcement at last week’s D23 Convention in Anaheim.

Now many had expected that announcement to come during the session on Disney Parks and Resorts, but instead, the usually cool and impassive Bob Iger, couldn’t wait, and dropped the announcement during the session on Disney movies, elating that audience, and greatly disappointing the fans attending the other session who had hoped to witness Star Wars history.

Mr. Iger also announced that not only would Stars Wars Land be coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, a park desperately in need of a shot in the arm, but that it would also be built at Disneyland, a fact which greatly shocked fans of the park and Star Wars alike.

But sources tell us that no one was more shocked about it coming to Disneyland than the Imagineers and designers of the new land.  As far as they knew, it was only destined for Orlando.

One of the chief Imagineers on the project, spoke to ENN on the condition of anonymity.  According to her, Mr. Iger is apparently a huge Star Wars fan, and has been chomping at the bit to make the announcement.  When the day came, he first jumped the gun and revealed it, as we mentioned in the wrong session.

But apparently the crowd’s reaction to it was so overwhelming and so intoxicating that the showman in Mr. Iger came out and he threw in the extra park just to stoke the crowd. Needless to say that sent Disney execs scrambling to change the press releases and left Imagineers to now figure out how to carve 14 acres out of the already quite packed 160 acre Disneyland Park.

Said this anonymous Imagineer of the situation.  “His juvenile attempt to get increase audience approval is costing us dearly in  overtime and vacations. Apparently THIS is how liberty dies…with his thunderous applause!”

Hello and welcome to the August 23rd edition of “Guest Room” on ENN, the Ears News Network, bringing you Disney news you won’t believe…..and probably shouldn’t. I’m your host, Parker Byrd.
Well, if you follow Disney news…heck…really any news at all, you’ve heard that Disney made it official that they are building Star Wars Land. And speaking of the Jungle Cruise, while this was not announced at D23, just a few days following, The Hollywood Reporter ran a story saying that Disney is planning a live action film based on the Jungle Cruise attraction. The film is expected to star professional wrestler turned blockbuster actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The movie is in its early stages and apparently the script has yet to be written. Yet, some Disney fans are already having difficulty imagining Mr. Johnson in any role related to the movie, and question whether he could bring the right mix of adventure and comedy to project.

But Kristin Burr, the Executive Vice President of Production at Walt Disney Pictures, proactively defended Johnson against the naysayers. She said, “Dwayne was absolutely the perfect pick to headline the Jungle Cruise movie! When it comes to finding a solid adventuresome type with a classic comedy twist, nobody does it better than him. His talent is routinely underestimated and it’s just a shame that so many people take “The Rock”, for granite.

Primeval Whirl Refurb Brings a “Frozen” Theme

Primeval Whirl

Primeval Whirl at Dinoland, USA in the Animal Kingdom park.

Disney quietly announced that on August 17th Primeval Whirl, a steel mouse-style coaster with spinning cars, located in the Dinoland USA section of the park, closing for a three month refurbishment.  Currently the attraction is themed to be a hokey, roadside attraction style time traveling to the dinosaur era kind of thing.

But our ENN sources tell us there is a retheming taking place.  When the attraction reopens on November 13th, it will have been renamed Marshmallow’s Swirl.

The story line is that you are in a car with Anna, Kristoff and Olaf  heading up the hill to the ice palace. At the top, you see Marshmallow, Elsa’s giant snowman bodyguard.  As the coaster goes down the track you are greeted with signs and cutouts recreating Marshmallow’s chase of the trio.  The track will be slightly reconfigured to allow a seemingly deep drop as you near the bottom to recreate the Anna and Kristoff’s drop from the cliff.

Attraction spokesperson, Wes Elton said that they are excited about the new attraction for three very important reasons.

  1. Dinoland, USA has been in need for some fresh creativity for a really long time.
  2. The theme is more relatable to kids and should increase interest in the attraction.
  3. Third, and most importantly, it meets Disney’s resort operations Strategic Goal #111913F, which states that, “By  beginning of fiscal year 2017, no Disney park will remain unFrozen”.

No 3rd Gate! But Star Wars/Marvel Hotel in Offing at Disneyland

Monorail and Matterhorn at Disneyland

The monorail is seen passing by the Matterhorn at the Magic Kingdom park in Disneyland.

The Orange County Register and several other news sources reported earlier this month that property records show that Disney has been making some real estate purchases around Anaheim.  Last year, they bought two office building on Manchester Drive.  Back in March they bought the Carousel Inn and Suites, which sits on Harbor Blvd, directly across the street from the entrance to the Esplanade that sits between Disneyland and California Adventure.  The hotel also, coincidentally enough backs up on to one of the Manchester Ave properties, which in turn is adjacent to the second Manchester Ave property.

Needless to say this has sparked great speculation throughout the Disney community.  Some believe that backstage functions currently being managed from buildings just outside the parks will be relocated to these new properties freeing up the area on which those current backstage buildings sit to be annexed into the park

Others have speculated that this will be the location of the new parking garage Disney promised the City of Anaheim it would build in the near future.

Still others, more hopefully, are speculating that this could fit, albeit rather tightly, a long awaited third park at the Disneyland resort.

While no concrete evidence exists, it appears that the latter group may just get their way…sort of.  Inside sources are telling ENN that there has been ongoing difficulty in trying to fit all the new things guests want into the existing parks.  With demand for Star Wars and Marvel Attractions, copies of the Orlando New Fantasyland attractions like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Storytime with Belle, expanded Soarin’ capacity, as well as a Disneyland version of the Frozen ride, there simply is not enough room to accommodate everything.

But by the same token, they are wanting to preserve Disneyland’s history and intimacy of having all the parks right off the Esplanade.  So a new innovative solution was devised.

The new properties off of Manchester Ave will house all the show buildings for the new Star Wars, Marvel, Fantasyland, and Frozen attractions.  The new area is being referred to internally as “Star Marvs Fantandell”.

So how will this work?  Well, the facades for the new attractions will be built inside of the existing Disneyland park. The queues will also be there. But the attraction vehicles will actually transport guests to the new show buildings via a series of appropriately themed tunnels that will be built under Harbor blvd and the existing Carousel Inn and Suites. The vehicles will of course return back through the tunnels, so that passengers will be discharged back in Disneyland. So they won’t realize that they actually had left.

The hotel for its part will remain but be rethemed oddly enough to a mixture of properties, with the bottom two floors Marvel themed, and the top three floors themed to Star Wars. What will they call this new schizophrenic resort?  The Fantastic Yavin 4.

PARKER: Splitsville for PigMit, New Land, New Plan for Disneyland, Disney Profits a Real Credit to Park Guests, and it may soon finally be Frozen in the Animal Kingdom

Hello and welcome to the August 15th edition of “Guest Room” on ENN, the Ears News Network, bringing you Disney news you won’t believe…..and probably shouldn’t. I’m your host, Parker Byrd with this Muppet News Flash….Muppets fans everywhere were rocked earlier this month by the news of the break up of the franchise’s most favorite couple, Kermit and Miss Piggy. The pairing which fans like to refer to as KerPig, or PigKer, or Kergy….or is it Pigmit…whatever, was announced in an official press statement posted on Twitter by Kermit himself. The statement read in part….

“After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, we have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on Television”

(and in parentheses it promoted their upcoming show),

“and in all media now known or hereafter devised in perpetuity, throughout the universe.”

It went to say that their personal lives were now “distinct and separate”, that they would see others, and asked that we respect their privacy in this matter.

Now, it should not have really come as a shock to die hard Muppet fans, as the pitch video for the upcoming TV series was released a week prior to this announcement, and in it, Kermit is showing dating another….well…pig.  And their break up was addressed.

But we still sent our field reporter Erin Dole, out to see what the everyday person on the street thought of the break up.

Erin?

ERIN: Thanks Parker. I’m out here at the corner of Elstree and Clarendon Road to ask passersby what they think. Excuse me,  what do you think of the Pigmit break up?

WOMAN 1: The what?

ERIN: The break up of Miss Piggy and Kermit.

WOMAN:  Oh! I hadn’t heard!  What a shame! I wonder what broke them up…even though I knew it wouldn’t last long.

ERIN: Well, they were together for over 40 years.

WOMAN: Forty years?  That’ll do it!

ERIN: OooooKay…Um, you sir, what do you think about Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog breaking up?

MAN: Its a tragedy!  Its horrible! Its devastating!  I just don’t know what I am going to do.

ERIN: Wow sir!  I can’t believe that you are taking this so hard.

MAN: Wouldn’t you!  Look!

ERIN: You have a tattoo of a heart with Kermit and Miss Piggy that says ” ham and legs forever!”???

MAN: And I JUST had it put on last week!!!!

ERIN: You probably should have watched the pitch reel then….Ok…..um…you miss….what do you think of Kermit and Miss Piggy breaking up?

GIRL: Oh no they didn’t! What? Hold on. What’s going on here? They broke up? uh uh.

ERIN: No, they definitely did.

GIRL: Ain’t nobody got time for that.

ERIN: Well apparently THEY did…..  So, as usual Parker….mixed reactions out here….  Personally, I think the real winner in all of this is Miss Piggy.  Now she is free to date a much bigger Hollywood star…one befitting who she is…..you know…like Kevin Bacon.  Back to you Parker.

PARKER:  Thanks Erin. Kevin Bacon…..hmmmm…..The Orange County Register and several other news sources reported earlier this month that property records show that Disney has been making some real estate purchases around Anaheim.

Welcome back to ENN, the Ears News Network. Turning to financial news, Disney recently reported record third quarter earnings for fiscal year 2015 to be $2.5 billion.  Included in this number is $4.1 billion in revenues for the Parks and Resorts division, which represented a 4% increase over the same period last year with a 9% increase in operating income. This was attributed to growth in volume of guests (i.e. attendance) and guest spending.

We should note that much of this volume can be attributed to park tie-ins from Disney’s recent successful films.  And this has caused quite an uproar in the fiscal circles. As one noted economist put it “This has got to be the first time in my career that I have seen a company generate income with Frozen assets.

Now Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said of this record breaking earnings report, “The strong results across our many diverse lines of business demonstrate the power of our unparalleled brands, franchises and creative content.”

He went on to announce that in celebration of the record earnings, Disney increased the credit limits for the amounts park resort guests could charge to their room, either through their magic bands or room key.  The limit at the Value and Moderate resorts was increased to $1500, and the limit at the Deluxe resorts to a full $2,000.  Said Iger of the increase,

“We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our record earnings than allowing our guests to spend more!”Turning to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Disney quietly announced that on August 17th Primeval Whirl, a steel mouse-style coaster with spinning cars, located in the Dinoland USA section of the park, will be closing for a three month refurbishment.  Currently the attraction is themed to be a hokey, roadside attraction style time traveling to the dinosaur era kind of thing. New ECVs “Substainably” Faster

ECV at Disney

©Disney

Several Disney blogs are reporting the appearance of new models of the ECV, electronic conveyance vehicle, which guests needing assistance can use to navigate the parks. The vehicles really improve the quality of the park experience for those who need it, and are an important service.

The new models are reportedly easier to operate and more intuitive in their design.  However, some guests have noticed that the speed of the ECV has dramatically increased.  And,  that there has been a corresponding increase in noise for the normally quiet vehicles.

When asked about the increased speed and noise, a Disney spokesperson admitted that as part of a sustainable responsible resource usage initiative, the new ECV’s were recycled versions of the cars previously employed by the now shuttered Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Talk about a Fast Pass!

Spaceship Earth Facing Sponsor (and Attraction) Change

Spaceship Earth with Glidden Sponsorship

Potential look of Spaceship Earth under new sponsorship from Glidden. Base image ©Disney

Disney recently announced a new exhibit coming to Innoventions in EPCOT called “Colortopia”. The exhibit is sponsored by the Glidden paint brand, which is owned by PPG Architectural Coatings.  Glidden currently makes a line of official Disney paints which is sold exclusively at Wal-Mart. This new exhibit will reportedly be interactive and hands-on though no specifics have yet been given. However, one cast member has reported seeing some advance Colortopia merchandise including a multi-colored dragon mascot named “pigment.” Colortopia is scheduled to open this Fall.

But it is also being rumored that Glidden has plans stirring to shake things up.  Apparently they are negotiating with Disney to cover the sponsorship of the Spaceship Earth attraction and  brush aside current sponsor, Siemen’s when their contract dries up in 2017. Part of their proposal is to spruce up the laser projectors to splash crystal clear and vibrant color palettes on the exterior of Spaceship Earth. But plans are also rolling to give the attraction interior itself a major freshening. They plan to pour on the creativity to touch up existing scenes and spill out new exhibits which will give guests a solid primer on the discovery, history, innovations and future of ….paint. The new spread will be renamed to  “Paint Chip Earth”.

Of course it is still all “rumor” right now, and we will have better coverage in the future. But with such good stuff in the can don’t expect them to keep a lid on it much longer.

What’s old is new again…even if it never exactly was…or so it will be thanks to some big upcoming changes to Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom in the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando.  Before Stitch’s Great Escape was Stitch’s Great Escape, it was ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter, an attraction based off of the movie Alien. Before that it was an attraction called “Mission to Mars” that took guests on a simulated, if not rather quick, trip to Mars. That was an updated version of “Flight to the Moon” which took guests on a trip around the moon.  The Disneyland version of this had even one more previous version called “Rocket to the Moon”.

Now if you are wondering where this history lesson is going….its going back to the moon.  Stitch’s Great Escape will soon be closing to make room for “Rocket Wagon to the Moon” an attraction inspired by the recent Disney/Pixar hit, “Inside Out”.

In the new attraction, guest will be seated in the same circular theater currently there for Stitch, but of course, rethemed to match the movie.  An animatronic Bing Bong, the imaginary friend from the movie will tell guests about the great times he and Riley had when she was younger. He will also teach guests several cute songs.  Then something will occur that lands Bing Bong and the guests in the Memory Dump.  There, they will have to work together to sing and power the rocket sled out of the memory dump and all the way to the moon!

The title of the attraction “Rocket Sled to the Moon” is a nod to the original “Rocket to the Moon” but it also replaces the proposed name for the attraction “The Bing Bong Sing-a-Long”.
